What a great find to start out our time in Portland! We chose this due to its location (close to the airport) and high reviews. I’ve eaten Ethiopian food before but my husband had not. It’s a little hidden, but once you enter you smell the deliciousness! We had to wait a bit for our food, but oh was it worth it! Absolutely delicious! Highly recommend!
Think I just found my favorite Ethiopian place in Portland. Generous portions at affordable price and everything was delicious.Everything I tried was vegetarian. The lentil sambusas were so flavorfully simple and the lentil injera appetizer was super delicious. And all the sides in the veggie combo were delicious, even the collard greens, which other restaurants normally make flavorless. Will definitely be back!
I saw this place off TikTok, the person on TikTok said they had tried many Ethiopian places in portland and this was one of the best ones. I haven’t had a lot of Ethiopian food but I can say this place packs so much flavor in every bite.
The outside was uninviting and a bit scary, but don’t let that deter you. The food was delicious authentic Ethiopian dishes. The service was prompt and friendly. The cost was modest. If you’re in the area and want a somewhat exotic meal this is a great option. We had the 2 meat 3 veggie combo and it was a generous meal for the two of us.
I have tried nearly every Ethiopian restaurant in PDX and I can confidently state that Gebeta is the *best* Ethiopian food in Portland. We ordered the Gebeta Special (3 veg, 5 meat) and destroyed the entire platter of food. What makes Gabeta stand out is the way the food is seasoned - it is absolute perfection. Proper seasoning made misir wat (red lentils) a standout dish instead of a forgetful, bland legume. The tanginess of the gomen (greens) made it a perfect pair with the deeply red and rich doro wat (chicken). The simple side salad and cabbage were welcome palate cleansers between bites - each simple, yet flavorful. The star of the show was the key wot, a spicy, savory beef stew that knocked it out of the park with its rainbow of spices. There is a reason why Gebeta has a 4.9 rating! We will definitely be back and bring friends with us.
We ordered the quanta firfir, a dish of beef, mixed with enjera and all coated in a spicy red sauce. We also had the missir wot and it was made to order. Everything was tasty. Local clientele, very comfortable.
Hands down the very best Ethiopian food my family and I have enjoyed - and we’ve eaten a lot in many cities on the West Coast and even in Arizona. Flavors are spot on; the injera is perfect; service is warm and welcoming, the setting is comfortable. We will be back again and again. Try it!
The good: The food is AMAZING! I basically got the pick your 5 meat and 3 veggie platter. I wanted a little bit of everything since I never been to an Ethiopian Restaurant before. All off the portions were great. You can tell the food is marinated well. The salad was PERFECT! Full of flavor. The greens were a meal itself. The bread that's around it taste good with food. The Ethiopian beer was some of the best I've had! It's definitely a must try.
